The GORE-TEX membrane is an extremely thin layer of expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePFTE).
The membrane's microscopic pores are 20,000 times smaller than a drop of water, which means no rain can seep through.
The pores are 700 times larger than a molecule of water vapor, which allows the unhindered passage of body vapors.
The structure of the membrane is similar to a hedge. The wind is retained within its shoots and its passage to the body is prevented.
The wind permeability of the GORE-TEX and WINDSTOPPER membrane is extremely important because of the protection of the body from the so-called Wind-chill effect, i.e. cooling of the body caused by the wind.
